Jean Gaillard "Terres de Mandrin" Syrah Collines Rhodaniennes I.G.P. '21

    Northern Rhône

Jean Gaillard "Terres de Mandrin" Syrah Collines Rhodaniennes I.G.P. '21

Winemaking has been a part of Jeanne Gaillard’s since her childhood. The daughter of the winemaker Pierre Gaillard, she began working in the family vineyard at a young age and later studied viticulture. Since 2008, when she was 24 years old, she has worked with five hectares of land in the Crozes-Hermitage area and eight hectares in the Collines Rhodaniennes area.

This 100% Syrah is made from grapes grown in several different plots, with the vines planted on about 10 hectares of land (in Marsaz, Colombier-le-Vieux, Charnas, and Malleval) and averaging about 20 years in age. The soils are a mix of pebbles, sand, and eroded granite. “Terres de Mandrin” is named after a character who can be described as the French folklore version of Robin Hood, Louis Mandrin. The wine is made in a lighter, fruitier, more approachable style compared with that of the northern Rhône’s well-known village appellations, yet still expresses the classic characteristics of the region’s Syrah wines. The grapes are destemmed, then macerated and fermented at cool, controlled temperatures. Élevage is carried out in a combination of barrel and tank, for about 12 months.

This is the finest example of the "everyday" Syrah from Gaillard that I've tried. An elegant expression of Syrah, this has pretty red fruit notes, hints of white pepper, and a balanced, fresh finish. This will be extremely versatile at the table, from a simple roasted chicken to roasted lamb.
